TALKING POINT

UAE ENTERPRISES NEED SMARTER DATA MANAGEMENT

Matthias Nijs, VP Sales EMEA at Datadobi, explains why CIOs need greater intelligence, visibility and orchestration across their data estates to control costs, strengthen governance and prepare trusted data for the AI era.

A new category of software is emerging across the UAE’ s fast-growing infrastructure market: an intelligence and orchestration layer for unstructured data, built to help CIOs and their teams discover, align and operationalise data across fragmented enterprise environments. Rather than simply adding capacity to store more of it, this approach is starting to pay real dividends for businesses. UAE CIOs are especially well placed to put it to work, given how much new infrastructure is already being built here.

Getting ahead of the problem means doing three things: discovering what unstructured data an organisation actually holds, aligning it with its real business value and access requirements and operationalising policy-driven action to keep it that way as it grows. This becomes an ongoing
Matthias Nijs, VP Sales EMEA at Datadobi discipline, and the CIOs who build it in early will be the ones setting the pace.
Every enterprise in the UAE is generating unstructured data faster than ever before. Banks in DIFC, hospitals in Abu Dhabi, logistics firms operating out of Jebel Ali and government entities working towards National AI Strategy 2031 targets are all sitting on growing volumes of files, images, sensor logs and documents.
The natural instinct when storage fills up is to add more, feeding an ongoing cycle in which more data simply demands more storage.
For CIOs facing that instinct daily, the UAE’ s fast-moving digital agenda puts them in a strong position to do something smarter instead.
Unstructured data now makes up roughly nine in every ten bytes an organisation holds, so this has become less a storage question and more a question of what that storage is actually worth.
Capacity, in principle, is never in short supply, since it can always be bought. The country’ s data centre market alone is on track to grow from US $ 1.74 billion in 2026 to US $ 3.86 billion by 2031, with installed IT load expanding from 537MW to more than 711MW over the same period.
The real opportunity for CIOs lies in spending that capacity budget more intelligently, freeing up funds for the AI initiatives, cybersecurity and digital transformation projects that UAE boardrooms and their CIOs are already prioritising in line with Vision 2031 and Net Zero 2050 commitments.
The UAE’ s data centre footprint has expanded rapidly over the past two years, backed by some of the region’ s most ambitious infrastructure investment, including new sovereign AI campuses in Abu Dhabi. That scale of build-out is precisely why addressing data management now gives CIOs a head start.
Not all data carries the same value, and recognising that is where the real efficiency gains lie. A five-year-old audit log, for instance, holds a different value to the business than yesterday’ s customer transaction record. Yet many organisations store both at the same cost, on the same tier, indefinitely.
With proper visibility into what data exists, where it lives and who owns it, CIOs can make that distinction, reduce their cyberattack surface, simplify compliance under the UAE’ s Personal Data Protection Law and get trustworthy data ready for AI faster than competitors still buying their way through the problem.
There is a useful parallel with the early scepticism around server virtualisation. When VMware first allowed a customer to run ten workloads on one server, it looked like a loss for the hardware vendor selling the other nine. Over time, the opposite proved true: virtualisation made server infrastructure so much more useful that overall demand grew.
CIOs and storage vendors in the UAE have the same opportunity today.
Those who help customers classify, tier and govern their data as it ages will build stronger, longer relationships, while their customers will achieve storage spending that genuinely reflects the value of what they are storing. •
