Get to Know... Cyber security: Inspiring business confidence
The lighter side of things, we ask the
industry-experts what makes them tick… We must learn to think of cyber security as a potential
profit centre and not merely as a cost centre

Style, but no substance?
A new report released by Cisco has headlined
with the news that a majority of CSOs
cite budget constraints as one of biggest
barriers to advancing security - never before
has the region and the industry released
statistics claiming that security spending is
skyrocketing! So, we mind be confused by the
results of this latest Cisco survey!
What seems to be stemming from the
report is that a reality is setting in with both
large corproates and smaller enterprises;
as much as they everyone realises security
spending must increase, viewing cyber
security as a cost centre, many companies
simply implement the bare minimum
standards to tick a compliance box. This line
of thinking unfortunately compromises an
organisation’s defensive posture, and is a
self-inhibitor to long-term business success -
so says a very acute article from DarkMatter
in this issue’s Final Word section.

Keeping in line with budgets and costs,
when you consider the lower infrastructure
cost, greater agility, and improved security
they offer in comparison to public clouds
or traditional client-server architectures,
it’s perhaps little surprise that a growing
number of organisations are investing in
hybrid clouds and virtualised, automated
data centres. One of the main features this
month discusses this very topic.
Manufacturing companies are one of the
most popular targets for cyber criminals,
based on the sheer amount of classified
information they hold. In fact, a recent
report from IBM X-Force Research’s
2016 Cyber Security Intelligence Index
found that the sector is the second most-
attacked industry behind healthcare,
with automotive manufacturers and
chemical companies scoring as the top
targets for attackers.
