FEATURE: DATA CENTRE COMMISSIONING
The commissioning process of a data centre can be a
very expensive and time-consuming affair if it has not
been planned properly. The key is to ensure that the
depth of commissioning is fully identified within the
design scope and then detailed in all respective contracts.
Thereby making sure from the on-set that the designated
contractors or installers are fully aware of the depth of
commission testing and projected timelines of service
delivery. However, a data centre will have multiple projects/
installs occurring throughout the lifecycle of the project, so
the commissioning must be a continual process (it cannot
all be left to the end of the project). So, it is essential that
the correct personnel undertake the various elements of
the commissioning process and it is recommended that
the business have appropriately skilled representatives in
place to witness that the correct commissioning and test
specifications have been successfully implemented.
When commissioning a data centre what factors
regarding time requirements need to be considered?
Commissioning is a key process that needs to be properly
planned and documented against the pre-determined
and agreed design delivery specifications, ensuring
detailed testing is enforced in-line with contractual

agreements. With all test fails and installation defects
fully documented with re-tests scheduled against the
agreed contractual timelines. This is essential to minimise
unnecessary additional repair and maintenance costs
during the life-cycle of critical operational equipment.
Which in turn helps reduce the risk of potential downtime
and subsequent loss of business revenue following the
commissioning process.

plant (overhead and underground), internal wiring and
internal cable systems, culminating in senior appointments
responsible for the design and planning of major large cable
infrastructure projects across numerous theatres. Adrian
progressed to specialise in the data centre environment,
during which an excellent level of experience was gained
designing and project managing data centre builds,
supporting major clients such as the British Government,
Ministry of Defence and other highly recognised London
based clientele. Adrian has gained a significant and
enviable list of globally recognised qualifications and
