elcome to the latest edition
of Intelligent CIO magazine.
As we head further into 2018
we are hearing about more and more IT
innovations that are setting the trends of the
future. One of these is the way that digital
technologies are transforming the workplace.
In fact, our cover story looks at how VMware
has enabled Dubai Municipality, the
government agency that fosters Dubai’s
growth and development, to embark on its
own digital workplace revolution.
We all know that an increasing number of
employees are bringing their own business
apps into the workplace and we hear how
Dubai Municipality faced the challenge
of ensuring its employees have consistent
access to business applications. In response
to this, Dubai Municipality launched a
digital transformation project leveraging the
expertise offered by VMware.
The organisation launched a digital
transformation project to virtualise
desktops and consolidate data centres
for business applications using VMware
Horizon Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and
VMware Workspace ONE. The result was the
implementation of a system where CIOs can
foster a culture of trust, accessibility, and
collaboration with employees being more
engaged and productive because of easier
access to information.
As our cover star Ahmed Kajoor, CIO, Dubai
Municipality, tells us: “People are extremely

happy now because they can access
information from anywhere, very easily. It
gives them the ability to see the same thing
the customer sees. They do not need to go
to the customer.”
In this month’s Intelligent Vertical we look at
how Information Technology is transforming
the hospitality sector. Graeme Kane,
Hospitality Business Development Manager
for Aruba, tells us how technology will
transform the guest experience at the hotels
of the future. And if you enjoy convenience
his predictions make for a very happy read.
Artificial intelligence, wearable technology
and virtual reality are set to make life easier
and more enjoyable. Hate those magnetic
swipe cards that always seem to fail? The
good news is keyless entry via smartphone
is the future with the hotel door unlocking
when a smartphone, supplied with an
encrypted code, is held near it.
In ‘Talking Business’ we speak to Nigel Tozer,
Solutions Marketing Director for Commvault,
about data protection.
remembering that insights from it can
uncover new business opportunities or
models, either in your current market or in an
adjacent one.
Nigel tells us: “It’s important to note that
value is easier to find if you are in control of
your data first.”
In this issue we also look at disaster recovery
and how to best avoid your worst nightmare;
significant loss of precious data that could
lead to reputational damage.
We talk to Nick Saunders, a cyber-resilience
expert at Mimecast, to discuss the possible
impact of a disaster and the best ways to
avoid one.
“The best way to manage disaster is with
an effective cyber resilience strategy,” he
tells us, before going into detail about how
enterprises should best manage emails to
avoid a security breach.
We have all the usual features and news
from around the region. Enjoy the read!
With more data being produced than ever
before it’s no surprise that enterprises are
struggling to deal with it. We discuss the
best approaches to take when dealing with
data and how to tackle the forthcoming
requirements of GDPR.
We are reminded of the benefits of
efficiently managing data; it’s worth
