INDUSTRY WATCH ANY TECHNOLOGICAL PLATFORM . . . NEEDS TO ADDRESS EVER CHANGING REQUIREMENTS AS NEW SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS ARE ADDED. T echnology changes quickly in the telecommunications sector with requirements transformed as new services on applications are added. There is general consensus that the telecoms market has to fundamentally restructure in order to deliver a world of distributed computing services. Here we ask Kamal Mokrani, Global Vice President, InfiNet Wireless, questions about recent and future developments in the telecommunications industry. What are the challenges operators are facing in the telecoms market? Service providers of all types are going through an evolution phase from one technological platform to another, but at the same time are often experiencing very difficult times as competitors are springing up everywhere and revenues are dwindling. This is common with almost all operators across the world. Of course, challenges faced by one operator in a specific region or country can vary from those of an operator elsewhere, but they have some common challenges which they must tackle if they want to grow or in some instances, just stay afloat. The most common challenges I have personally come across include fierce and/or unfair competition, ARPU going down all the time, price war, restrictions on capital and/or operational expenditure, bad debts, regulatory hurdles, customer churn, etc. www.intelligentcio.com How does the company enable providers to meet their customers’ needs for bandwidth, coverage and mobility? Telco operators and WISPs are one of our most strategic target markets. In fact, up until this year, close to 70% of our revenue came from this market. We offer three core solutions for this market to help these service providers meet the demands of their customers: • The InfiLINK 2x2 is our MIMO Point- to-Point (PTP) high-performance broadband wireless family for an all IP-based infrastructure. This family of solutions provides greater effective throughput (up to 500Mb/s in a 40Mhz channel) and increased link availability, all with a rich set of best-in-class features and benefits. The InfiLINK 2x2 family also provides unrivalled spectral efficiency, low latency and long-range transmissions over distances in excess of 80 km without repeaters. • Our latest solution, the InfiLINK XG 1000, is an addition to our PTP product portfolio. Designed specifically to meet the backhauling needs of wireless internet service providers (WISPs), 4G/5G mobile operators and digital oilfields, the InfiLINK XG 1000 is able of delivering throughputs of up to 1 Gigabit per second over the air in 5 GHz license-free frequency bands, effectively doubling the capacity of InfiNet’s previous highest performing product, the InfiLINK XG.
