Kaspersky detects phishing version of Arabic Netflix
Researchers from cybersecurity vendor Kaspersky have detected a wave of phishing attacks leading to a malicious domain perfectly disguised as a legitimate Netflix landing page . As a popular streaming platform , Netflix is also a popular disguise for phishers , yet only some of the criminals go so far to create webpages in local languages and target users in particular countries .
According to Kaspersky , Spam and phishing are a common massattack method because it is not only done at a large scale but also often uses names of the legitimate institutions and organisations , promoting fraudster ’ s chances of success in their hunt for innocent people ’ s credentials .
“ The fact is that nowadays personal information and credentials are the most valuable digital product . We can only guess how fraudsters may exploit Netflix credentials gathered as a result of such attacks , but the scenarios are never optimistic ,” said Tatyana Shcherbakova , Security Researcher at Kaspersky .
“ There are many variants : they might be sold on the dark web if the user has a prepaid subscription or used later to add credibility to a malicious e-mail scheme ( for instance , informing users of a necessity to pay for the account restoration and stealing money ) and even blackmail .”
Netflix has a number of measures in place to protect users ’ accounts including a dedicated support page that helps identify and handle suspicious communications .
Fraudsters exploit legitimate US lottery in Arabic fraudulent campaign that ’ s gone global
Researchers at cybersecurity vendor Kaspersky have detected a wave of fraudulent emails designed to make money for cybercriminals . The emails are disguised as lottery offer letters written in Arabic and contains a legitimate website link to make the email look trustworthy , yet in fact invite users to share their personal data in return for a chance to receive their prize money .
“ People may think that spam and mail fraud mean e-mails with incredible offers , weird links and too-good-to-be-true discounts . However , it is important to keep in mind , that even the most innocent infomail might contain hidden traps and result in a loss of personal data and money . Such schemes are very old and widespread yet we can see that they are still successful with unprotected users ,” said Tatyana Shcherbakova , Security Researcher , Kaspersky .
According to Kaspersky , in September , its researchers detected at least 7000 attempts to steal credentials , with various versions of the text inviting users to part take . Kaspersky experts believe this campaign is still running and is targeting Arabs and Arabic speakers around the world . Spam and phishing are the attack vector that withdraw fraudsters from a technological race between cybercriminals and cybersecurity experts . It doesn ’ t require technical expertise , as it relies on human errors and therefore often succeeds .
