CASE STUDY
The hospitality and hotel sector is transforming in Europe , Middle East and Africa ( EMEA ). The arrival of on-demand , online services such as Agoda . com , Hotels . com , Air BnB and Booking . com has given rise to a new breed of accommodation providers that rely solely on technology to secure bookings – but own no physical assets , that the traditional hotel sector has been accustomed to .
With the transformation and innovation currently afoot in the hotel and hospitality sector , the industry has been turned on its head and long-standing hotel chains are now facing the need to transform themselves into digital-first accommodation providers in order to meet the expectations of today ’ s savvy customers .
For Rotana hotels , which has a portfolio of 100 properties in Eastern Europe , Middle East , Turkey and Africa , the need to stay apace with the evolving marketplace amidst the growing competition in this sector has meant the hotel chain has had to make a number of changes to increase efficiencies and improve the security posture of its digital infrastructure .
The changes are necessary given that the group welcomes over six million guests at its properties every year . For Rotana hotels , a major part of this transformation and digital-first agenda has centred around enhancing its data management systems and securing its digital infrastructure in a bid to stay apace with the burgeoning competition for customers especially in a country like the UAE – one of the world ’ s most desirable tourist destinations .
For Biju Dharmaraj , Director of IT Security and Infrastructure at Rotana , his concern was about the company ’ s email security . “ We were using a managed security provider ( MSP ) for email security and the solution was very basic . It was the first thing I tried to change when I came on board ,” he said .
