CASE STUDY

Technology and innovation are among the key themes at COP28 , along with inclusion , frontline communities and finance . As a leader in a global technology company , operating in a way that protects our planet is always on Adele Trombetta ’ s mind .

In her own words : “ It ’ s extremely important to move beyond a ‘ doing no harm ’ mindset and adopt a holistic approach to environmental sustainability . That includes how we operate our business , how we engage with suppliers and how we help customers and communities reduce their environmental impacts and adapt to a changing world .”
Trombetta , known to be a transformational leader with deep business expertise , points out that technology is a key lever for change : “ With technology , it is possible to rethink business models in ways that are digital and low carbon , but also improve individual wellbeing and create opportunities for communities .”
A 25-year-plus veteran of the tech industry , Trombetta joined Cisco just over five years ago and says one of the main reasons she joined the company was because of its purpose-driven culture . To work for a company with a mission to ‘ power an inclusive future for all ’ is a privilege and a responsibility , she says , adding that employees are encouraged to be themselves , build new skills and become a catalyst for change .
She stresses that having a presence at events like COP28 reinforces Cisco ’ s commitment to society : “ It means we can be part of positive change for the future . It is the place where we can share stories , learn from each other and discuss how we can work together to help protect our planet for the future . Curbing climate change is not something we can do alone ; it is a collective effort .”
Part of Cisco ’ s purpose to power an inclusive future for all is to promote a sustainable future , says Trombetta , highlighting what Cisco is doing to drive change : “ We ’ re helping to ensure a sustainable and regenerative planet with ongoing initiatives and solutions aimed at reducing emissions and addressing climate change .” Cisco has made it a collective responsibility to drive sustainability to the top of the corporate agenda , introducing the Chief Sustainability Office some 18 months ago to set the sustainability strategy and vision for the company .
Trombetta points out that as one of the largest providers of cloud , networking , hybrid work and security technologies , Cisco is committed to leveraging its scale and innovation to help ensure a sustainable , fair and resilient future .
Cisco ’ s goals
In 2021 , Cisco set a goal to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions across their value chain by 2040 . Their goal includes all scopes of emissions – Scope 1 , 2 , and 3 . Cisco is also among the first technology hardware and equipment companies to have its net-zero goal validated under the SBTi Net-Zero Standard .
